She stood there at the food bank’s front door. She probably wasn’t much older than 18 or 19 and with a soft voice she simply said, “I am so hungry. I will eat anything, even an onion.” The food bank wasn’t supposed to be open that day, but it opened for her. There are many in our area who daily struggle to feed themselves and their families. As the Covid-19 pandemic swept across our country and into our own county, we didn’t want to close our doors to those who might experience need during this time of crisis, so we decided to operate as a mobile pantry. Those who come on Mondays to receive food don’t come inside as they used too. It is more like a drive-thru at a fast food restaurant. The people who currently come to the food bank wait in line in their vehicles for their groceries instead of waiting in our waiting room.
Our food bank ministry, called “The Caring Kitchen,” is will be open every 2nd and 4th Monday of month from 9 a.m. to 12 noon beginning April 11, 2022. Anyone who needs help with food is welcome to come during these hours. We are located next to the Jay Seventh-day Adventist Church at 1115 W. Washbourne in Jay, Oklahoma.
As of March 13, 2020 due to the threat of Corona virus, the Caring Kitchen is cancelling hot meals until further notice. The food pantry will have a modified system so food only direct to your vehicle. No entry direct into the waiting room and food area.
